IMU ELT Community organized the event “Exploring Methods in English Language Teaching” on Wednesday, 11 December 2024. The speaker of the event was Dr. Christopher Korten from Oxford University Press, who met with English language teaching students and provided valuable insights on teaching methods.
Dr. Korten focused especially on the “Concept-Based Teaching” method. He explained how this teaching model can be used more effectively in language teaching and how it can provide students with a deeper understanding of language knowledge and skills. Korten emphasized that language teaching should go beyond the transfer of knowledge and that it would be much more efficient in terms of retention of learning if students learn languages through concepts.
During the event, students were not only provided with theoretical information but also with suggestions for practical applications. Through group work and discussions, the participants exchanged ideas on how to integrate the concepts they learned into their daily teaching processes. Dr. Korten suggested how teachers can be more flexible in their lesson plans and develop creative strategies to engage students.
This interactive event allowed students to learn about current approaches in English language teaching, while also contributing to their professional development. This event, organized by the IMU ELT Community, was of great importance for future English teachers. Participants stated that the event was extremely useful in terms of exploring innovative methods in education and discussing teaching strategies.
